Missha is a South Korean skincare and cosmetics brand founded in 2000. They make a variety of products from makeup and body/hair care to nail care. The company grew quite fast in Korea (and expanded to the US market in 2005). I think it’s because many people in Korea find that their products are fairly priced but do not compromise quality, so they have definitely captured the hearts of Koreans!
One very popular product in Korea is the BB creams. Actually in recent years they’ve been quite popular all over Asia, such as in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia. BB stands for “blemish balm” but in Western markets you typically see it labeled as “beauty balm” – I guess beauty sounds more appealing than blemish. They’re basically a foundation, concealer, and skin care product in one. Although Korean and Asian BB creams are tougher to find in Western markets, it has been easier than ever before to find the Korean BB cream for sale online. At the same time you could find BB creams from American brands as well – yet having used both I always just end up buying Korean brands because their products are incomparable.
Today I’m going to review the Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream. To give you some background, this cream is actually one of Missha’s bestsellers. It comes in 5 different shades (#13 Milky Beige, #21 Light Beige, #23 Natural Beige, #27 Honey Beige, #31 Golden Beige) so there’s without doubt one for every skin tone. Most BB creams come in only one or two shades so this one really offers options.
#13 Milky Beige
You can buy it in two different sizes (20ml and 50ml) but I usually purchase the 50ml tube because it comes with a pump, and unfortunately the smaller size does not. The reason is simple, the pump makes it more sanitary to use and is easier to dispense.
Because I have lighter skin tones (I’m Korean), I find that the #21 Light Beige and #23 Natural Beige works equally well. (If you’re wondering, my friend has said that shade #31 Golden Beige suits MAC NC40s and up.) In terms of the product it gives an even and natural look, and what I like best is that it contains soothing and moisturizing properties of a lotion. It is suitable for all skin types including acne-prone skin (like mine), and can be used as a makeup base or foundation.
The product does contain mineral oil and two forms of parabens, but my skin has never had a problem with the ingredients so it did not affect me. This product also is not oil free. I am very prone to break outs but found this product did not cause any further break outs for me. Besides, it did a great job of covering my existing acne! Although the product says it has the ability to heal visible wrinkles, as a woman in her late twenties, I can’t really say if it does a good job, but if you can comment on that below please do! Anyhow, it does minimize the appearance of my pores and acne.
While some of my colleagues (I work for a fashion magazine in Korea – you can read my bio here) had mentioned that they felt the product was a bit gray, it never happened in my experience. At first when you put it on you will notice a grayish shade, but it oxidizes on your skin after about 10 to 15 minutes to match your skin. I feel I look very natural with this product and have gotten comments that it doesn’t look like I am wearing much makeup. You can still see my natural skin tone. It also shows very well in pictures.
Since it contains SPF 42/PA+++ protection you won’t need to worry about the sun. If you want to learn more about the difference between SPF and PA rankings, I’ve put a short explanation on the homepage) I use this during the summer a lot and it was extremely convenient being able to use a single product when heading outside for a quick trip.
The product does also have a nice subtle scent, almost like that of a baby fresh out of the shower, so it’s a very nice smell and this is a major plus for me. If you are sensitive to this kind of baby/baby powder smell it may bother you, but I didn’t find any problems with it at all.
The BB cream is thick – it stays on for the whole day, even during the summer. I would not be surprised to see that this may be somewhat waterproof as well. I did find the product a bit hard to remove, however, but I guess that’s what you get for a product that lasts very long. That’s why I usually use a bit less than you normally would for other creams. A pea-sized drop of this product is enough to get great coverage. Also it’s important to apply it properly. It should be gently rubbed on to the face, and then patted where more coverage is needed. It does not work well with a brush or techniques usually used to apply foundation.
The Missha M Perfect Cover sells for $29.99 normally, and you could buy it on the Missha online store. But I generally get it at Amazon because it’s cheaper, and it would cost anywhere between $10-20 on sale. It’s really a great value product – Missha doesn’t lie when they say they want to make quality products at affordable price! I would say a 50ml tube lasts me around 1.5 years at its fastest, which is hard to believe but like I said, the product has great coverage and you only need to use a little dab each time.
Everything considered, I highly recommend this product and will continue buying it. It’s a true time saver, and the convenience of carrying an all in one product and being able to slap it on a scorching day is well worth the price. I have used American BB creams in the past but they just don’t match the quality of Korean BB creams. It’s kind of sad to say, but in Korea beauty is everything, yet on the other hand there are great products like this!
